Frequently
Asked Questions
What
are the benefits of the Alcatel OmniPCX Office e-mail server?
The Alcatel OmniPCX Office e-mail server improves enterprise
productivity by offering a new enterprise-wide communications
tool that supplements voice and data communications. Your
ISP (Internet Service Provider) provides e-mail support for
external traffic, while the Alcatel OmniPCX Office acts as
a local e-mail server to provide internal e-mail service to
users. The system manages internal and external e-mail, with
internal traffic supported on the LAN at no extra cost. For
external traffic, the system interacts with your ISP on behalf
of all users. The Alcatel OmniPCX Office regulates e-mail
traffic and reduces communications time. The system supports
dial-up Internet links, so the sending and receiving of e-mail
can be programmed on a regular basis. For example, the system
can connect to the ISP every 15 minutes to exchange mail.
Alcatel OmniPCX Office supports the major standard e-mail
protocols, such as POP3, IMPA4, SMTP, MIME and ETRN.
Can
the Alcatel OmniPCX Office e-mail server use standard ISP
subscriptions?
Yes. The Alcatel OmniPCX Office e-mail server is designed
to work with standard ISP subscriptions. User accounts can
be managed by the ISP, which interacts with the Alcatel OmniPCX
Office e-mail server. Alternately, user accounts can be fully
managed by Alcatel OmniPCX Office, which then interacts with
the ISP for traffic purposes only.
Can the Alcatel OmniPCX Office e-mail server re-use
existing POP3 e-mail accounts?
Yes, if the company already has POP3 accounts, you can set
up the Alcatel OmniPCX Office e-mail server to re-use them.
How
many e-mail users are supported?
You can set up as many as 200 e-mail boxes. Note, however,
that e-mail users are also potential Internet users. Thus,
the number of e-mail users must be coherent with the recommendations
for Internet access. The Alcatel OmniPCX Office e-mail server
provides global unified messaging, integrating its native
voice mail server with Internet access, and delivering voice
mail and e-mail through a single e-mail client. When a voice
message is left, the system directly transfers the voice mail
as an e-mail attachment or notifies the user of the message.
The user can then directly access the voice message from his
inbox stored on Alcatel OmniPCX Office.
Does the Alcatel OmniPCX Office e-mail server require
special e-mail client software?
No. There is no need for special software to be installed
on each PC. Alcatel OmniPCX Office is fully compatible with
standard Internet protocols such as POP3/IMPA4/SMTP/MIME.
Consequently, end users can use e-mail services through standard,
well-known e-mail clients such as Outlook, Eudora, Notes,
etc.
How does the Alcatel OmniPCX Office e-mail server
store electronic messages?
The Alcatel OmniPCX Office provides mail storage capacity
on an internal hard disk. Using a POP3 configuration, users
can download messages to read them; alternately, they can
consult their e-mail directly on the server, using the IMAP4
protocol. This solution is perfectly suited to SMEs, since
it is easy to use and requires no special skills or maintenance.
The storage capacity on the hard disk can be customized to
specify the overall storage capacity and allocate storage
capacity for each user.
Is it possible to use Alcatel OmniPCX Office if the
company already has an e-mail server?
Yes. If the company already has an e-mail server, Alcatel
OmniPCX Office can be used to redirect e-mail traffic to it.
In this case, the Alcatel OmniPCX Office does not have to
be configured as an e-mail server; it only needs shared Internet
access. In addition, Alcatel OmniPCX Office can provide supplementary
services such as a firewall or proxy server to control and
limit e-mail usage.
Does Alcatel OmniPCX Office provide unified voice,
e-mail and fax messaging?
Yes.
Voice mail and e-mail integration
With Alcatel
OmniPCX Office, each user can have an e-mail account and a
voice mailbox on the same system. Both applications can be
combined on the desktop to offer access to e-mail and voice
mail from a single user interface, provided by the client
e-mail application (e.g., Microsoft® Outlook™).
Voice mail can be automatically transferred from the Alcatel
OmniPCX Office system to the PC user's mailbox as an e-mail
with an audio file attached (in .wav format). The voice message
is clearly identified with a special icon and contains the
same type of information as traditional voice mail: name,
phone number, date and time. The user can forward this message
or answer it by sending a return e-mail, etc. It is also possible
to simply notify the user that he has received a new voice
message. Both of these functions can be performed without
using the internal e-mail server, if the company already has
an e-mail server on the LAN.
Fax
integration
The Alcatel
OmniPCX Office uses its embedded voice mail and e-mail servers
combined with an Internet Fax Service Provider (IFSP) to deliver
an easy and cost-effective unified messaging solution for
SMEs. The IFSP manages the fax service using the e-mail application.
Outgoing faxes are sent from the e-mail user interface; incoming
faxes can be directly received in the e-mail inbox as attachments.
This solution eliminates any investment in external servers
or software. The service is continuously available to internal
users, as well as to remote users through their e-mail applications.
